In San Francisco, the Chinese population huddled together in a dark and foreboding neighborhood. After the great earthquake, the city fathers and heads of the Chinese community met to create a more inviting (and commercial) neighborhood. They created a visual fantasy Chinatown, upon which all other Chinatowns are based. Truth is that there remains a Chinese population living there, and the area for food purchases, religious objects, toys, and sundries is unmatched in exotica and bargains.
